Constructing the Burj Khalifa
The construction of the Burj Khalifa was an extraordinary feat of engineering, which commenced in 2004. At its peak, the construction site buzzed with over 7500 skilled workers from around the globe. The project's spearhead, Samsung C&T, from South Korea, leveraged their Petronas Towers' experience.
The team had to devise innovative solutions to overcome numerous challenges. One of the most difficult tasks was creating concrete capable of enduring the immense weight and scorching Persian Gulf temperatures, which can reach 50 °C (122 °F).To address this issue, a solution was implemented during the summer months whereby ice was added to the concrete mixture. The pouring process was scheduled to take place at night, when the ambient air offered cooler temperatures and higher humidity levels.
In the midst of its grandeur and luxury, the Burj Khalifa also incorporates sustainability. It features a condensation collection system, providing millions of gallons of supplemental water annually to irrigate the nearby park. The external cladding reduces heat transmission, thus lowering cooling costs.
